Was London 2026 a one-off, or the new normal for elite fields?

Three men finished inside the old world record in one race in April, and the winner went under two hours. The question that decides most of this claim: how many record-eligible races in the next three years will bring together that kind of field on that kind of day?

Marathon world records usually stand for years, and the best time of the autumn so far is more than three minutes slower.

The record stands at 1:59:30. Set April 26, 2026 [1].

The one before it, 2:00:35, stood from October 2023 [2]. Two and a half years.

Now the autumn. Berlin, a famously fast course, went in 2:02:50 [3]. Over three minutes slower.

London was a perfect day: the right field, the right conditions, three guys under the old mark in one race [4]. Doing that again, and faster, within three years? Possible. Not likely.

Records fall. Just not every spring!
