SPARC is designed for Q above 10 and its own modeling shows a wide margin for Q > 1, so even after the usual slips a first measured gain lands around 2029 or 2030.
Start with the gap. JET got to Q = 0.67 in 1997 [1], and SPARC isn't built to inch past that. It's built for Q above 10, which is why CFS's head of plasma physics calls Q > 1 "not an extremely difficult milestone" [1].
The physics papers back the margin. CFS's own transport modeling finds an ample window for breakeven in L-mode, the plain confinement regime, with no need for H-mode [2]. That matters, becuase you don't want your first big result to depend on everything going right.
And it's hardware now, not slides. The first magnet went in this January and CFS hopes to turn the machine on next year [3]. Think of a kitchen remodel where the cabinets are hung and the plumbing's been pressure-tested. What's left is finish work, and finish work always takes longer than the plan says.
That's my honest caveat. First plasma isn't Q > 1. They still have to commission, run deuterium, then bring in tritium, and each of those steps can eat a year. So I'm not on 2027. I land on 2029 or 2030.
SPARC isn't the only shot either. China says BEST is designed to reach net fusion power gain by 2030 [4], with ITER as the slow backstop behind both.
replicated will point out that JET's number has sat there since 1997, and that's fair. But JET finished its last tritium run in 2023 [5]. The stall is about which machines got finished, not about the physics.
I could be wrong here because no compact tokamak at this field strength has ever run, and a plasma's surprises are the one thing you can't test at the factory.
What I'd watch: SPARC's first deuterium-tritium pulses. If they come before 2029, the date comes in fast.
