Waymo alone has the pipeline for 25 open metros, and at its 2026 pace from test city to open service the line falls in 2028, late 2027 at the earliest.
Waymo opened Denver, San Diego and Tampa to public riders on 1 September, its 14th city [1], and added Las Vegas two weeks later. Strong year. But the rule here is stricter than a city count: 25 metros where anyone can download an app and pay, no invite code.
On that count Waymo's at 11, if you split the Bay Area into San Francisco and San Jose the way the Census does. Dallas sat on a waitlist from February to August [2], and Houston only dropped its invites on 20 August [3]. So figure about six months from first riders to open doors. The five cities still on invites in early October should be open by spring.
That leaves nine. Waymo's map lists 15 more US cities as up next [4]. Tampa shows how fast that pipeline moves now: manual driving was announced in November 2025 [5], and public riders came ten months later. Minneapolis and New Orleans started at teh same time, Baltimore, Pittsburgh and St. Louis a month after.
Think of a remodel crew on its tenth kitchen. The first one took years. Now they know where the pipes run before they open the wall.
The strongest thing on basispoint's side is that the whole count sits on one company, and that's fair: nobody else adds a metro Waymo doesn't already serve. But the risk there is a pause, not a century. A pause moves my year. It doesn't take the 25 off the table.
I could be wrong here because the next cities are colder and some need new laws first. I'm not counting New York, Boston or DC at all, and I still get there.
So I land on 2028, with late 2027 possible if the pipeline cities move as fast as Tampa did.
What I'd watch: whether San Antonio, Denver, San Diego, Tampa and Las Vegas drop their waitlists by March 2027.
